How to Rewrite Selected Text Anywhere on Your Computer

Yes, there are apps that rewrite selected text anywhere on your computer. Edyt is one. Select the text in any app, press Ctrl+Shift+C, and the fixed version replaces your selection, on Windows or Mac.

The other way is to copy a sentence into a chat window, ask for a fix, copy the answer back, and repair the formatting. That is a lot of steps for one sentence.

A late reply in a shared chat: select it, press the Rewrite shortcut, and the fixed message replaces it

The three ways to do it

Rewrite, Ctrl+Shift+C. This fixes spelling, grammar and punctuation and keeps your words. Text that is already right comes back unchanged. If you want it to do more, you can edit its instruction.

Alternatives, Ctrl+Shift+L. When a sentence is correct but sounds wrong, this shows several versions and you pick one.

Your own prompts. Write an instruction once, like "make this shorter and friendlier", and run it on any selection. Because you write the instruction, the result can sound like you.

If you forget a shortcut, Ctrl+Shift+Space opens the toolbar with every action on it.

Where it works

It works where you can select text: email, chat, documents and browsers. Some apps handle selection differently, so the experience is not identical everywhere. If an app does not let you paste back, you can still copy the result.

On a Mac, Edyt asks for Accessibility permission so it can read your selection and put the result back. Windows needs no extra permission.

What it will not do

It does not read your whole screen or your documents. It works with the text you select, so if you select one vague sentence, you may get a vague result.

Each rewrite counts as one action. The free plan has 30 actions a week, and Pro removes the limit. The pricing page has the current numbers.

Pick one sentence you were not happy with today and run it. You will know in a few seconds if this is useful to you.

Try it on your own writing.
